3 Cooperative Board Games for
3-year-olds.
We love cooperative games!
Sometimes kids (and even adults) can get caught up in the “winning” (and “losing”) aspect of board games. What I love about cooperative games is that they remove the competitiveness of players playing against each other. Instead, all players are on the same team, working toward the same goal – often all players are competing against a pretend opponent within the game (for example, the raven in HABA’s My First Orchard). Because players are all working together, it brings the focus of gameplay back to what board games should be about – having FUN!
For our kids, cooperative games were a great way to become familiar with the rules of “game play”. For example, taking turns, rolling dice, spinning a spinner, and moving pieces. This is one reason that I recommend cooperative games as great “first games”. See my article on Favorite Board Games for 2-year-olds.
There are lots of benefits to playing cooperative games with kids. Cooperative games encourage teamwork and positive social relationships as players help one another. Kids develop important social skills, like listening, sharing ides and supporting each other, which make cooperative games great for kids of all ages!
This article is my first in a new series, focusing on cooperative games by age! Use these posts as a loose guideline- just because a board game shows up in a list for one age, doesn’t mean that it can’t be enjoyed by kids of other ages as well!!

First Orchard by HABA
First Orchard is a cooperative game in which all players work together to collect fruit before the raven reaches the orchard. It is a classic first game for young kids and you can start playing it with kids as young as 2-years-old. With First Orchard, kids practice rolling a die, taking turns and color matching, which makes this a great game to play with your 3-year-old! You also can’t beat the chunky wooden pieces and the simple game play. In our house, the game is usually accompanied by lots of giggles as we play and try to beat the “pesky raven”.
Snug as a Bug in a Rug by Peaceable Kingdom
Snug as a Bug in a Rug by Peaceable Kingdom is another great cooperative game! In this game, the game board is a cardboard “rug” that is cleverly designed to lay slightly above the tabletop. During the gameplay, you spin the spinner and find a bug with a matching attribute and slip it under the rug. All players work together to rescue the bugs before three stink bugs appear on the rug! I love that with this game kids can practice colors, shapes, counting and the concept of big vs small. The rules are simple and game play is fast (less than 15 minutes), making it a great game to play with your 3-year-old!
Count Your Chickens by Peaceable Kingdom
Another cooperative game by Peaceable Kingdom rounds out the list of favorite cooperative games for 3-year-olds! Count Your Chickens is a gentle introduction to counting. In this game, all players work together to help Mother Hen collect her Baby Chicks and put them back in the chicken coop. All players work together to rescue the Baby Chicks before the Mother Hen reaches the last spot on the gameboard.
One thing that I love about this game is that it does not require knowledge of number symbols to play, but kids sill practice verbal counting using 1:1 correspondence. Players count as they move along the game board and they count as they collect and move Baby Chicks into the chicken coop. This makes Count Your Chickens a perfect counting game to play with a 3-year-old!
