SCIENCE WITH CANDY CANES

SAVE this holiday twist on the classic at-home STEM activity! ❤️🤍

TO DO:
- Place candy canes on a shallow dish or plate.
- Pour warm water onto the plate.
- Observe!

THE SCIENCE:
When water is added, the sugar in the candy canes begins to dissolve. This sugar diffuses to areas where there is no sugar (the water) and the color spreads in the process!

Try creating different patterns with the candy canes and watch the colors spread!

If you don’t have candy canes, you can do a similar science activity using Skittles, M&Ms or other candies with a similar candy-coating.

SAVE this easy #kidactivity! 🎄

Water will not absorb into wax paper, instead it beads up on the surface! The water beads will cling to something like a toothpick and you can carefully move it around the wax paper!

TO DO:
- Use permanent markers to create a string of lights on a sheet of wax paper.
- Using a dropper, place dyed water on the wax paper.
- Give your child a toothpick to carefully move the water droplets.
- Match the water drops to the colored lights and mix primary colors to make the secondary colors!

SAVE this idea to try with your kids! ❄️

To Create a Snowstorm in a Jar:
1️⃣Mix white paint with water in a clear jar or glass.
2️⃣Add eco-friendly glitter (optional).
3️⃣Add baby oil. (You want approx 1:2 water:oil ratio)
4️⃣Add an Alka-Seltzer tablet.
5️⃣Observe!

🧪The Science:
Water is more dense than oil, so it sinks to the bottom.
When you drop in the Alka-Seltzer tablet, it starts dissolving in the water. As it dissolves, carbon dioxide gas is released and rises to the top. As it rises, it takes the white water with it, but the gas bubbles break at the surface and the “snowy” water will sink back down! 🌨

Don’t have Alka-Seltzer? Comment “LAVA LAMP” and I will send you another way to create the “lava lamp” effect without the effervescent tablet!

❗️Make sure to properly dispose of the oil!
I usually let the oil & water settle/separate and pour the oil into a container with a lid. I save it for the next time we want to make a “lava lamp” or another activity that uses oil!

Have you tried puffy paint before?

TO MAKE:
- Mix approximately equal parts of shaving foam and school glue.
- Make a snowman on cardstock paper.
- Add details to the snowman while the puffy paint is still wet. We added a hat and carrot nose cut out from paper. For eyes and buttons, we used dried black beans, but you could use black paper or small buttons!
- Lay your artwork flat to dry.

Enjoy the process of creating puffy paint art! Even if your child has trouble creating the circles for a traditional ‘snowman’ shape, they can still add the snowman details to create a “melting snowman”! 😉

TIPS:
Use thicker paper like cardstock or even cardboard to paint on!

1️⃣ The play basin is removable. This makes it easier to switch out play setups and hose down the play basin (when things get really messy 😉)

We currently use the rotating book display to hold lots of our soft cover nature books plus some of our favorite board books.
It would also be a great way to store chapter books that your kids love!

The secret to focused, engaged play? Don’t break their concentration!

I think we have all made this mistake before- our kids are playing independently and we say something, ask a question, or try to grab a “cute photo”. It instantly breaks their focus and they direct their attention to you and away from their independent play. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I am genuinely interested in what they are creating or working on, but instead of interrupting their concentration, I try to wait and often my kids will come to me to tell me about what they were working on! 🙌🏼Then I can ask questions and give them the opportunity to tell me more! ❤️

As a mom to three young kids, we spend a lot of time talking about our emotions! 😁🥰😭😡

In our play space, I set up a shelf filled with tools that the kids can use by themselves or we can use together.
We also use books as a tool to learn about and discuss emotions!

On the shelf:
- Emotion board by @jackandlinktoys : This allows each child to mark how they are feeling at the time.
- “The Book of Big Feelings” by @mrswordsmith_ : Identify emotions & build vocabulary
- Audio Player by @yotoplay_us and audio books : audio books are a great calming activity. A current FAVORITE is the series “Brain Bots”.
- Games for emotional development
- Emotion match mirror & card set by @lovevery
- Calming sensory bottles by @sensorytoysbox and some homemade bottles
- Calming circle by @lovevery to practice calming breaths
- The bottom shelf is filled with another favorite calming activity: playdough and playdough tools

Nothing beats fresh playdough! All three of my kids (ages 6, 5, and 3) can easily play with playdough for HOURS! 🙌🏼

The top four things they tend to grab for playdough play include:
1️⃣ Playdough cutters
2️⃣ Mini figurines
3️⃣ Laminated playdough mats
4️⃣ Large playdough roller

I love playdough as a calming activity 🧘🏼‍♀️ and I love that they are building their finger muscles and fine motor skills as they play! 💪🏼

Do you have any M&M or Skittles candy leftover from trick-or-treating? You gotta try this activity with your kids ⬇️⬇️⬇️

TO DO:
1️⃣Place warm water in a container.
2️⃣Place M&Ms into the glass with the “m” side up.
3️⃣Wait and observe!
4️⃣Almost immediately, the candy coating of the M&M will begin to dissolve. After about 2-3 minutes, the “m” printed on the candy will peel away from the candy and float to the top!

THE SCIENCE:
While the candy coating on M&Ms dissolves in water, the “m” on M&Ms is made from edible ink that does not dissolve in water. The candy sinks to the bottom of the container because it is more dense than water. However, the “m” is less dense than water and floats to the top!
This also works with the “S” on Skittles candies!

What is your child dressing up as?
We have a wizard 🪄, a bat 🦇, and a jellyfish 🪼!

If you are looking for a simple activity for today, try this Spooky Lava Lamp activity! 👻

TO DO:
1️⃣Decorate the outside of your container to look like a ghost. I taped on black paper for the mouth and added googly eyes.
2️⃣Add water & white paint to the container.
3️⃣Add oil (I used baby oil), leaving a little space at the top. (You want about ⅓ water to ⅔ oil).
4️⃣Drop in an effervescent tablet (like Alka-Seltzer) and watch the bubbly reaction!
5️⃣ Have FUN!! 🤍

This is your reminder to freeze baking soda into m

This is your reminder to freeze baking soda into molds for an EASY Halloween activity!

TO DO:
1️⃣Make a paste by mixing baking soda with a small amount of water. (Start with a very small amount of water - you can always add more)
Optional: Mix in food coloring.
2️⃣Spoon the paste into a Halloween mold or ice cube tray.
3️⃣Freeze for at least a couple of hours.

4️⃣On a large tray, add baking soda.
5️⃣Place your frozen baking soda on top.
6️⃣In small bowls, mix vinegar with food coloring. (Optional: Add a squeeze of dish soap).

Give your child droppers and let them create colorful fizzy reactions!

🧊Why Freeze Baking Soda?
Freezing the baking soda makes the fun last longer! Keep adding vinegar until the spooky shapes are gone!

TIPS:
Dilute the vinegar with water (up to 1:1 dilution). There is very little change to the amount of fizz that you will see!

⚠️You don’t want your child to get baking soda or vinegar in their eyes, so I recommend safety glasses. 🥽I have our favorite safety glasses in my Amazon Shop under “Science Supplies”. Comment “GLASSES” below for the link 🔗
