CRAFT STICK TREE ORNAMENT🎄
SAVE this easy DIY Christmas craft!

TO MAKE:
1️⃣ Paint craft sticks green and let dry.
2️⃣ Glue the tops of four craft sticks together to form a tree shape. (We used hot glue but you could use white/school glue).
3️⃣ Use white glue to add sequins or buttons to decorate the tree.
4️⃣ Hot glue a ribbon onto the back to make an ornament!
5️⃣ Hang and enjoy!

TO DO:
1️⃣Outline your design using white school glue on watercolor paper.
2️⃣Cover your design in salt.
3️⃣For the colors, wet down watercolor paint or use food coloring mixed with water.
4️⃣As your paint brush touches the salt, you will see the color being absorbed and move through the salt design!
5️⃣Have fun!!

SCIENCE IN ART:
You can observe the absorption properties of salt. As the water touches the salt, the water (and color) is absorbed and will spread through the salt design.
Try adding different colors next to each other and observe what happens!
Art activities like this are a great way for kids to explore and learn about color mixing!

❗️TIPS:
- Use watercolor paper! You can also use thicker card stock, but I don’t recommend using printer or construction paper.
- You want your paint to be watered down. This makes it more likely that you will see the effect of the color spreading through the salt!
- Wait until the glue dries before painting. This gives you a chance to gently tap the paper on its side to knock off any pieces of salt/glue that come loose as the glue dries. And makes it less likely these pieces will fall off after you paint!

The beauty of open-ended toys is that they continue to grow with your child! Here are 7 of our favorite open-ended toys:

1️⃣ Playsilks - when I first bought playsilks from @sarahssilks , I really underestimated how much my kids would use them! They are one of our most versatile and most used items in our playroom!

2️⃣ Unit blocks - the standardized and chunky size of these wooden blocks make them great for young kids to build with. My older kids love getting creative and making large builds with these blocks; they are a great investment that grows with your child! Our unit blocks are by @guidecraft_official

3️⃣ Block sets - we love the variety of block types and colors that you can find in block sets. The set shown is by @avdar.toys (and is available on Amazon!) It includes a variety of unique pieces that my kids love, including wooden cars, peg people and wooden animals!

4️⃣ Animal figurines - we have a large collection of animal and dinosaur figurines, including wooden ones and more realistic figurines. We started getting animal figurines when my oldest was around a year old, at that age they are great to use as language objects to build vocabulary!

5️⃣ MAGNA-TILES - one of my kids’ current favorite toys, they love building with magnetic tiles. They love the @magnatiles sets that include vehicles, animal and dinosaur figurines! Pieces shown are from the Builder XL Construction Set (currently on SALE!)

6️⃣ Vehicles - Vehicle toys pair so well with everything on the list!

7️⃣ LEGO DUPLO - DUPLOS are amazing! The large size makes them great for toddlers but my older kids still love building with DUPLOS and I love seeing how creative they get with their builds! One of our favorite sets is the LEGO DUPLO train!

SCIENCE WITH CANDY CANES

SAVE this holiday twist on the classic at-home STEM activity! ❤️🤍

TO DO:
- Place candy canes on a shallow dish or plate.
- Pour warm water onto the plate.
- Observe!

THE SCIENCE:
When water is added, the sugar in the candy canes begins to dissolve. This sugar diffuses to areas where there is no sugar (the water) and the color spreads in the process!

Try creating different patterns with the candy canes and watch the colors spread!

If you don’t have candy canes, you can do a similar science activity using Skittles, M&Ms or other candies with a similar candy-coating.

Water will not absorb into wax paper, instead it beads up on the surface! The water beads will cling to something like a toothpick and you can carefully move it around the wax paper!

TO DO:
- Use permanent markers to create a string of lights on a sheet of wax paper.
- Using a dropper, place dyed water on the wax paper.
- Give your child a toothpick to carefully move the water droplets.
- Match the water drops to the colored lights and mix primary colors to make the secondary colors!

SAVE this idea to try with your kids! ❄️

To Create a Snowstorm in a Jar:
1️⃣Mix white paint with water in a clear jar or glass.
2️⃣Add eco-friendly glitter (optional).
3️⃣Add baby oil. (You want approx 1:2 water:oil ratio)
4️⃣Add an Alka-Seltzer tablet.
5️⃣Observe!

🧪The Science:
Water is more dense than oil, so it sinks to the bottom.
When you drop in the Alka-Seltzer tablet, it starts dissolving in the water. As it dissolves, carbon dioxide gas is released and rises to the top. As it rises, it takes the white water with it, but the gas bubbles break at the surface and the “snowy” water will sink back down! 🌨

Don’t have Alka-Seltzer? Comment “LAVA LAMP” and I will send you another way to create the “lava lamp” effect without the effervescent tablet!

❗️Make sure to properly dispose of the oil!
I usually let the oil & water settle/separate and pour the oil into a container with a lid. I save it for the next time we want to make a “lava lamp” or another activity that uses oil!

TO MAKE:
- Mix approximately equal parts of shaving foam and school glue.
- Make a snowman on cardstock paper.
- Add details to the snowman while the puffy paint is still wet. We added a hat and carrot nose cut out from paper. For eyes and buttons, we used dried black beans, but you could use black paper or small buttons!
- Lay your artwork flat to dry.

Enjoy the process of creating puffy paint art! Even if your child has trouble creating the circles for a traditional ‘snowman’ shape, they can still add the snowman details to create a “melting snowman”! 😉

TIPS:
Use thicker paper like cardstock or even cardboard to paint on!

The secret to focused, engaged play? Don’t break their concentration!

I think we have all made this mistake before- our kids are playing independently and we say something, ask a question, or try to grab a “cute photo”. It instantly breaks their focus and they direct their attention to you and away from their independent play. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I am genuinely interested in what they are creating or working on, but instead of interrupting their concentration, I try to wait and often my kids will come to me to tell me about what they were working on! 🙌🏼Then I can ask questions and give them the opportunity to tell me more! ❤️

As a mom to three young kids, we spend a lot of time talking about our emotions! 😁🥰😭😡

In our play space, I set up a shelf filled with tools that the kids can use by themselves or we can use together.
We also use books as a tool to learn about and discuss emotions!

On the shelf:
- Emotion board by @jackandlinktoys : This allows each child to mark how they are feeling at the time.
- “The Book of Big Feelings” by @mrswordsmith_ : Identify emotions & build vocabulary
- Audio Player by @yotoplay_us and audio books : audio books are a great calming activity. A current FAVORITE is the series “Brain Bots”.
- Games for emotional development
- Emotion match mirror & card set by @lovevery
- Calming sensory bottles by @sensorytoysbox and some homemade bottles
- Calming circle by @lovevery to practice calming breaths
- The bottom shelf is filled with another favorite calming activity: playdough and playdough tools

Nothing beats fresh playdough! All three of my kids (ages 6, 5, and 3) can easily play with playdough for HOURS! 🙌🏼

The top four things they tend to grab for playdough play include:
1️⃣ Playdough cutters

3️⃣ Laminated playdough mats
4️⃣ Large playdough roller

I love playdough as a calming activity 🧘🏼‍♀️ and I love that they are building their finger muscles and fine motor skills as they play! 💪🏼

Do you have any M&M or Skittles candy leftover from trick-or-treating? You gotta try this activity with your kids ⬇️⬇️⬇️

TO DO:
1️⃣Place warm water in a container.
2️⃣Place M&Ms into the glass with the “m” side up.
3️⃣Wait and observe!
4️⃣Almost immediately, the candy coating of the M&M will begin to dissolve. After about 2-3 minutes, the “m” printed on the candy will peel away from the candy and float to the top!

THE SCIENCE:
While the candy coating on M&Ms dissolves in water, the “m” on M&Ms is made from edible ink that does not dissolve in water. The candy sinks to the bottom of the container because it is more dense than water. However, the “m” is less dense than water and floats to the top!
This also works with the “S” on Skittles candies!

What is your child dressing up as?
We have a wizard 🪄, a bat 🦇, and a jellyfish 🪼!

If you are looking for a simple activity for today, try this Spooky Lava Lamp activity! 👻

TO DO:
1️⃣Decorate the outside of your container to look like a ghost. I taped on black paper for the mouth and added googly eyes.
2️⃣Add water & white paint to the container.
3️⃣Add oil (I used baby oil), leaving a little space at the top. (You want about ⅓ water to ⅔ oil).
4️⃣Drop in an effervescent tablet (like Alka-Seltzer) and watch the bubbly reaction!
5️⃣ Have FUN!! 🤍
